Traveling with pets can be an adventure full of special moments, but it also requires a good dose of planning. As a pet lover and blogger, I have embarked on the adventure of traveling with my furry friends more than once, and I have learned a lot along the way. Here I share my experience and some tips to make your trip with pets as pleasant and stress-free as possible.
Preparations before traveling
Consult with the veterinarian: I always recommend visiting the vet before traveling, especially if your pet is not used to traveling long distances or staying in new places. Make sure that they have all their vaccinations up to date, their health is optimal, and if necessary, ask them for recommendations to help your pet stay calm during the trip.
Documentation in order: Many destinations, especially if they are international, require that pets have a health passport or a health certificate. Check the requirements of the place you are going to and make sure to bring copies of the necessary documents to avoid problems at customs or when entering certain accommodations.
Research pet-friendly accommodations: Not all accommodations accept pets, so it's essential to look for pet-friendly hotels, hostels, or rental houses. Also, make sure they have adequate facilities for your pet, such as spaces for walking, safe resting areas, and even some amenities like special beds or food and water bowls. Reviews from other travelers can also be very useful to learn about the experiences of others who have already traveled with their furry friends.
Tips for a comfortable trip
Pack a “suitcase” for your pet: Include their essentials, such as favorite toys, treats, their bed or blanket, and, of course, enough food and water for the trip. Make sure to also bring a leash and, if necessary, a crate or carrier where they can feel safe.
Make frequent stops: If you are traveling by car, plan stops every 2-3 hours so your pet can stretch, drink water, and relieve themselves. They are also affected by the trip and need a break.
Stay calm during the trip: Animals are very sensitive to our moods, so if you are nervous or anxious, they are likely to be too. Talk to them in a calm tone, pet them if they seem restless, and give them a toy or treat to distract them.
Some final tips
Keep activities in mind: Some tourist places do not allow pets, so plan your travel activities taking into account what your furry friend can or cannot do with you.
Extra identification: Make sure your pet is wearing a collar with your updated contact information and, if possible, a microchip. This is important in case your pet gets lost in an unfamiliar place.
Be respectful: Not all guests or travelers are pet lovers. Make sure to keep your furry friend under control in common areas and respect the rules of the place you are staying.
