What type of driver's license should I use when I am a tourist?

To drive abroad on a tourist trip, you usually need an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your valid driver's license from your home country. The IDP is an official translation of your driver's license and is used to help you avoid language barriers and ensure that local traffic officers can understand your permit. Here are some key details on where and how to use the IDP:

What is the International Driving Permit (IDP)?

The IDP allows you to drive in over 150 countries and translates your license into several languages, usually in 10 common languages, including English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Chinese. This document facilitates identification and is valid for one year, but must be accompanied by your original license, as it is not a stand-alone permit.
Countries where the International Driving Permit is accepted

Europe: Most countries in the European Union and other European countries such as Switzerland, Norway and the United Kingdom accept the IDP for tourists.
North America: In both Canada and the United States, the IDP is accepted and often required by car rental companies. In Mexico, although the home license is sufficient for short periods, the IDP is recommended.

Latin America
: In countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru, the IDP is recognized and facilitates the process, although some nations allow the use of a foreign license for a limited time.

Asia: In destinations such as Japan and South Korea, the IDP is mandatory for tourists, as many Asian countries do not allow foreign licenses without this official translation. However, some countries, such as China, require a local license, as they do not accept the IDP.
Oceania: Australia and New Zealand accept the IDP, although the original license may be sufficient in some states or regions for short-term stays.

Africa: In countries such as South Africa and Egypt, the IDP is accepted and recommended to facilitate transit, especially outside urban areas.

Procedure for Obtaining the IDP

The IDP is issued in the country of origin, usually by authorized organizations such as automobile clubs or the department of traffic. In the US, for example, AAA and AATA issue these permits, while in other countries they may be available from the local traffic authority.

Situations where IDP is Necessary

  • Car Rental: Many rental agencies require the IDP to complete the rental.

  • Language Barriers: In countries where the most common languages are not spoken, the IDP is key to avoid misunderstandings.

  • Local Restrictions: Some countries have strict laws regarding the validity of foreign licenses, and the IDP is necessary to comply with these requirements.

  • It is important to check the specific regulations of the country you plan to visit, as rules may vary, and some destinations may require additional local licenses or special permits.
